Welcome to Hale Keaukaha, an exquisite home built in 1937, perfectly located just across from Hilo's Richardson Beach Park. This splendid black sand beach is a paradise for snorkeling, surfing, swimming, kayaking, and sunbathing. You will find yourself just minutes away from downtown Hilo and the airport, making this location both convenient and picturesque.

Your stay at Hale Keaukaha promises to be a genuine and luxurious Hawaiian getaway, ideal for couples seeking a memorable escape. Please note that rentals are limited to a maximum of seven days, and we cannot accommodate long-term stays. The nightly rate is based on two guests, with an additional per-person charge for up to six guests total. This fee will appear as a "host fee" on your invoice, but rest assured, the only other charge is a cleaning fee.

About Hale Keaukaha: This unique kamaaina home embodies the essence of Hawaiian architecture, featuring a traditional Dickey roof inspired by Kamehameha V's beach house in Waikiki. You'll appreciate the stunning ohia wood floors throughout the main residence, which adds to the authentic feel of Hilo.

Nestled in the beloved neighborhood of Keaukaha, where songs are sung and hula is performed, you will discover a coastline dotted with beaches—some boasting black sand and many offering easy water access. The local waters are crystal clear and provide excellent snorkeling opportunities, with sea turtles often seen resting on the rocks just across the street.

The front bedroom offers lovely views down the driveway toward the ocean, complemented by an adjoining bathroom with shower. The spacious queen bedroom features quality linens, cozy robes, a ceiling fan, and a floor fan to ensure your comfort. The master bedroom, expansive in size, overlooks the tranquil lava rock seating area in the backyard. You’ll enjoy the elegant king bed with fine linens, along with a ceiling fan, floor fan, and a walk-in closet. The attached bath retains its charming 1930s character while showcasing modern fixtures and amenities.

Hale Keaukaha also includes a separate ohana, an attached loft apartment featuring a bedroom, half-kitchen, walk-in shower, living and dining areas, and a loft bedroom (note: this space is not suitable for children). Adorned with koa wood cabinets and lauhala paneling, the ohana boasts a kitchen equipped with a good espresso maker and toaster oven (please note, there’s no full oven or stove). Relax in the comfy queen bed beneath a skylight while enjoying views of the lush green backyard and tree ferns through the private entrance.

All bedding typically consists of organic materials, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. Each room is outfitted with ceiling fans and tower fans for added comfort. The full kitchen features period-appropriate Formica counters and is stocked with essential appliances including a microwave, toaster oven, waffle maker, blender, and more. All tap water is filtered, with an extra filtration system available in the kitchen. Outside, you'll find a Weber BBQ grill perfect for al fresco cooking.

The main house is equipped with a smart television, DVD player, and reliable wireless internet access that extends to the ohana. Please note, like most accommodations in Hawaii, air conditioning is not available.

Appreciate the local artistry featured throughout the home, where works by Avi Kiriaty, Peggy Hopper, Roger Whitlock, Jack Lord, and other talented artists adorn the walls. Cleaning supplies used are, whenever possible, organic and environmentally friendly, though we have opted for Clorox and Lysol during and post-COVID for enhanced safety between guests.

Accessibility: Several steps lead up into the main house, and the ohana includes stairs to the loft bedroom and transitions between the bath and front room.

A charming aspect of Hilo includes the familiar sounds of coqui frogs chirping in the evenings along with the occasional rooster crowing. For light sleepers, ear plugs are provided, and we recommend utilizing floor fans for white noise.

We kindly ask guests to observe house rules: maintain a respectful noise level, especially during the designated quiet hours from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., and comply with local noise regulations. Smoking is prohibited on the property, and parties—including dinner gatherings—are not allowed without prior consent from managers. Pets are also not permitted.

Please inform us immediately if any damages occur or repairs are needed during your stay. Guests are responsible for taking out the rubbish for Monday morning pickup. The house is filled with books, decor, and amenities for your enjoyment; kindly refrain from removing items from the property and treat everything with care.
